Ellen Eliza Walsh
Born Yarmouth Isle of Wight 1836
Eliza is Maurice’s eldest sister, before 1837 is it quite difficult to find birth details on Find my Past as they do not have reliable on line records before 1837.
Where the date of the census is underlined you can click the date and see the census for that year.
Her age has been estimated from the census in 1851 (click date to see census) when she is recorded at 15 years old along with her two sisters and three of her four brothers. At the time the eldest son, William James jnr is living with their father, away from their main place of abode at a coastguard cottage.
In 1858 she marries Thomas Henry Roberts, like her father a member of the Royal Navy Coastguard.
By the 1861 census we find her with two children, Augustus and Thomas, both children under 2 years old, living at 22, Sea Salter, Whitstable, also at the time of the census we find her mother staying with her.
Her father, William has the some of rest of the children with him at a coast guards cottage, Teynsham, Kent.
At the time of the 1871 census they are living in Reculver Kent and now has Augustus now 11, Ellen aged 9, William 8, Elizabeth 7, Llewellyn 1 and finally Percy aged 2 months. Thomas who would have now been 10 years old does not appear.
1881 we find them living in Finsbury road, Ramsgate, they now have Bertha 5, Frank 4 and Sydney 2 years old, Thomas the father has now retired and is described as a pensioner, chief boatsman coastguard. Eldest daughter Elizabeth who is now 17 years old is down as a scholar.
The next census, 1891 we find she is now a widow living on her own means in Berridge road, Isle of Sheppey just around the corner from her father and also brother Maurice. Daughter Ellen, called Bessie, lives with her and has her trade down as a dress maker. My research indicates that her husband Thomas died in 1886 but this is not confirmed.
By 1901 Ellen now 63 years old is living with the Higgins family, believed to be relatives.
