Ellen Fredrica Francesca Clara (Nellie)

Born Rochester Kent 21st September 1883

Died Middlesex 1952 aged 69

Ellen was Annies older sister, born just over a year earlier, the two sisters went so Notre Dame convent in Battersea together and were both musical, up to the 1901 census we find them both living at home.

In the 1891 census, living just around the corner from them at 115, Berridge road, on the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent is William H S Bostridge living with his mother a widow already at 36 years old, she is down as a dress maker and William of course as a scholar.

In 1909 Ellen married William H Bostridge in Kent, Williams address of Berridge road runs between Winstanley road and Alma Road, two addresses lived in by the Walsh’s, it is therefore very likely that Ellen married a child hood sweetheart.

Can only establish at this time that they had two children, Brian in 1911 and Ian W Bostridge in 1921, however these may not be the only children, by the time of the 1911 census non of the Bostridge family show up as being resident in England, we know that William Bostridge was an Officer in the Egyptian labour corp, we also know he was based there some of the time as we have postcards sent to his nephew, David Webb, our father, from William in Egypt.

We know or fairly sure from my sisters recollection there was a Marjorie or Maggie Bostridge but so far I have not been able to find this combination, the only marriages I can find for the sons is that Brian married a Katherine H Tagg in 1940 and Ian Bostridge married Heather Fisk in 1942, of course this does not take into consideration any other children, including Marjorie or Maggie that were born outside England when William was stationed abroad.

We also know for a fairly long period of time she was living in St. Margarets, Twickenham, our nan Annie also lived at one of their houses in St Margarets Twickenham and one could surmise that Annie lived there whilst her sister lived abroad.

Ellen first appears in the Census in 1891 aged 8 years old, for the census she is down as Ellen Fifi, at this point all the family are living in the house with the addition of 2 lodgers and a Susan Webb a domestic.

For more see the 1891 Census.

1901 Ellen appears, living at home with Maurice, Charles (2nd eldest son) and Annie Georgina.

1909 Marries a William H Bostridge.

1911 No record of them living in England at the time of the census, in this year though, son Brian’s birth is registered in Medway, Kent.

1921 Son Ian W Bostridge is birth is registered in Brentford, West London, probably when living in Twickenham, Middlesex.

1925 William Bostridge dies aged just 43 years old in St Martins, London.

1940 Brian marries Katherine Tagg and 1942 Ian marries Heather Fisk.
